Twelve Rock Lifters Qualify for South State

18 February 2006 - SSC's powerlifters scored a total of 72 points to surge ahead of second place Quitman High School in the 3-4A Regional Powerlifting meet held today in the Blaize Gymnasium at Saint Stanislaus. Pearl River Central took third with 18 points. In all, nine 4A schools from southeastern Mississippi competed in the meet.

All twelve SSC lifters placed in the top three in their weight classes, qualifying them to compete in the South State meet in March. SSC lifters placing first in their weight classes were senior Chris Tran, with a total lift of 900 pounds in the 114 pound class; junior Ravi Varma, with a total lift of 880 pounds in the 132 pound class; junior David Grapusa, with a total lift of 1070 pounds in the 165 pound class; senior Buddy Schultz, with a total lift of 1280 pounds in the 242 pound class; junior Caleb McQueen, with a total lift of 1525 pounds in the 275 pound class; senior J C Brignone, with a total lift of 1495 pounds in the 308 pound class; and junior Sean Bentz, with a total lift of 960 pounds in the Super Heavyweight class.

Caleb McQueen's squat and bench press weights were the best in the meet, as was his total weight lifted, while J C Brignone lifted the most in the dead lift. Chris Tran's total lift was 7.86 times his body weight, giving him the best weight to weight ration at the meet. The 4A South State Championship powerlifting meet will be held at Saint Stanislaus on Friday, March 10.
